Whether you’re applying for a German visa or looking for a job in Germany, you may need a Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) to prove how your foreign university degree compares to a qualification in the German education system.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through how I applied for my ZAB Statement of Comparability, including the application process, the challenges I faced, and my personal timeline.

Hopefully, my experience will give you a better idea of what to expect before starting your own application!

What Is a Statement of Comparability (ZAB)?

I want to briefly introduce what this is before we get started 😊

Important: A Statement of Comparability is not the same as professional recognition (Anerkennung). It doesn’t automatically qualify you to work in regulated professions, such as medicine or nursing.

A Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) is an official document issued by Germany’s Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB – Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen).

It evaluates your foreign university degree and explains how it compares to a qualification in the German education system. This Certificate does not expire.

For example, if you completed a bachelor’s degree outside Germany, the Statement of Comparability can confirm whether your qualification is comparable to a German bachelor’s degree.

Why might you need it?

  • Job applications: Helps German employers understand your foreign university qualification.
  • Visa applications: May be required as proof of your degree’s comparability, depending on the visa type and your situation.
  • Career opportunities: Provides an official assessment of your academic qualification in Germany.

💡 Before applying, check whether your university and degree are already listed in the Anabin database.

For more information, check out my other post: How to check your degree on Anabin

Depending on your situation, Anabin evidence may be sufficient, meaning you might not need to pay for a separate ZAB Statement of Comparability.

Before You Apply

Before starting your application, you’ll need to create an account and prepare your documents.

Step 1 Create your ZAB account

First, head to the official ZAB website.

To access the online application, you’ll need a BundID account, which is used to access various German government services online. When registering for BundID, you’ll see several identification and login options.

This might look a little confusing at first, especially if you’re applying from outside Germany.

If you don’t have a German electronic ID or another supported identification method, you can generally use the username and password option.

That’s the option I’d recommend checking first if you’re applying from abroad. Once you’ve created your BundID account, you can use it to access your ZAB account.

Step 2 Go to the Statement of Comparability Application

Now that you’ve created your account, you’re ready to start your application!

Select Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) and follow the instructions.

Before filling out the application, ZAB recommends completing its Pre-Check. This gives you a personalised checklist of the documents you’ll need.

I would definitely recommend preparing everything beforehand!

⚠️ A little warning from my experience: Don’t leave your application page sitting open for too long. I’ll explain why in the next section!

01

How do You Apply?

Now comes the actual application!

The process isn’t particularly difficult, but it can feel a little confusing if you’re doing it for the first time.

Luckily, ZAB now offers an online application process, so you can upload your documents and communicate with them through your account. Just 2-3 years ago, you still need to deal with all of these through mails. Like literal post mails.

Let’s go through it together. I GOT YOU!!!!

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Before filling out the application, make sure you have all the documents listed in your personalised ZAB checklist.

Depending on your educational background, these may include:

  • Passport or another accepted identity document
  • University degree certificate
  • Transcript of records
  • Other educational documents
  • Translations, if required

ZAB’s Pre-Check will tell you which documents you need for your specific situation.

Make sure your scans are clear and readable, and follow the required PDF format.

Step 2: Fill Out the Online Application

Now you can start entering your personal and educational information. Here’s one thing I really want to warn you about!

⚠️ Don’t assume your application progress has been saved automatically.

This happened to me when I was applying. I was already halfway through filling out the application when I came across something I wasn’t sure about. So, I opened another page to look it up. When I came back a few minutes later, I realised I had to enter my information all over again. I swear I was only gone for around five minutes! 😭

If you need to pee or have a break do it now!!!! 🙂‍↕️

Upload Your Identification Document

You’ll need to upload an accepted identification document. For many international applicants, this will be a valid passport.

⚠️ Please make sure your passport is still valid before you submit your application.

Here’s something I personally worried about. 👉 My Experience: What If I Renew My Passport During the Application?

When I applied for my Statement of Comparability, my passport was still valid for approximately another year. However, I was also preparing to apply for Germany’s Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card). Since I was planning to stay in Germany for a year, I decided to renew my passport before submitting my visa application. But that created another question:

❓What happens if I apply for my ZAB Statement of Comparability using my old passport and then renew it before receiving the certificate?

I was genuinely worried that my new passport number might cause problems. So, I contacted ZAB directly to ask. Luckily, the staff member explained that my passport number wouldn’t appear on the Statement of Comparability, so renewing my passport during the application process wouldn’t affect the validity of the certificate.

Of course, this was the information ZAB gave me for my situation. If your personal details change or you’re unsure about your documents, I’d recommend contacting ZAB directly.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Once you’ve entered all the required information and uploaded your documents, carefully review everything before submitting. Double-check your personal details, educational information, and uploaded files. After submitting, you’ll receive a notification of fees.

And now comes the payment!

01

How Much Does a ZAB Statement of Comparability Cost?

Payment

As of October 2026, the regular application fee is €208.

You can pay using:

  • Credit card (Visa or Mastercard)
  • PayPal
  • SEPA bank transfer

The regular payment deadline is three weeks after receiving the notification of fees.

‼️Important: ZAB only starts processing your application after receiving your complete required documents and the full payment.

⚠️ Don’t Forget Your Payment Confirmation!

Once ZAB receives your payment, you’ll receive a confirmation message in your account. In my case, it took around two days. If you pay online and haven’t received confirmation after two business days, ZAB advises contacting them through your account. You can also check your application status under My Applications.

01

How Long Does the ZAB Application Take?

Once your documents and payment have been received, there’s not much else you can do except wait. And yes, the waiting part can be frustrating! 😂

According to ZAB, the standard processing time for a Statement of Comparability is approximately three months. However, this doesn’t mean three months from the day you first submitted your application.

The processing period starts once ZAB has received:

  1. All required documents
  2. Your full application fee

For example:

If ZAB receives your complete documents and payment on 1 April, you can roughly plan around a three-month processing period. That would mean expecting your result around July, assuming no additional documents or delays are involved.

‼️ Important: This is an estimated processing period, not a guaranteed delivery date.

If you already know you’ll need a Statement of Comparability, apply early enough to allow for the standard processing time.

01

Can You Get Your Statement of Comparability Faster?

You might be wondering: 🙋‍♀️ “Is there a way to speed up the application?”

The answer is: Only in certain eligible cases. ZAB has shorter processing periods for some immigration procedures.

Application TypeOfficial Processing Period
Regular application3 months
EU Blue Card
2 weeks
Fast-Track Procedure for Skilled Workers
2 months

➡️ EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU)

If you need a Statement of Comparability for an eligible EU Blue Card application, ZAB aims to process it within approximately two weeks.

However, you’ll need to indicate that the statement is required for an EU Blue Card and provide the relevant supporting documents. These generally include a signed German employment contract or an appropriate letter of intent from your future employer. Simply planning to apply for an EU Blue Card isn’t enough to qualify for faster processing.

➡️ Fast-Track Procedure for Skilled Workers:

Another possibility is the Fast-Track Procedure for Skilled Workers (beschleunigtes Fachkräfteverfahren). In eligible cases, the ZAB processing period is approximately two months.

However, this is a specific immigration procedure involving the relevant German immigration authority and employer. It isn’t automatically available to everyone who qualifies as a skilled worker.

🙋‍♀️ What About the Chancenkarte?

Unfortunately, applying for the Chancenkarte doesn’t qualify for faster ZAB processing.

ZAB specifically states that it cannot expedite applications simply because you’re applying for or planning to apply for an Opportunity Card.

So, if you’re applying for the Chancenkarte like I was, I’d recommend allowing enough time for the regular processing period.

01

This is my Timeline

I’d like to share my personal timeline so you can see how the process went for me.

ZAB Statement of Comparability application timeline in Germany: Application submitted on March 25, 2026, payment confirmation received on March 27, and certificate received on June 19, after approximately 86 days.

Of course, this was only my personal experience. Your processing time may be different depending on your documents, application category, and ZAB’s workload.

Still, I hope this timeline gives you a more realistic idea of what to expect.

My Tips

Tip 1: Don’t Take Unnecessary Risks with Your Visa Application

Personally, I wouldn’t risk submitting my visa application if I wasn’t completely sure whether I needed a Statement of Comparability.

I know it’s expensive, and I understand that Anabin information may be sufficient in some cases. However, even small differences between your degree certificate and the information listed in Anabin could raise questions during your visa application.

What worries me is that if the German embassy or consulate eventually asks you to provide a Statement of Comparability, you might only have a very limited amount of time to submit it.

And considering that the standard ZAB processing time is around three months, I wouldn’t count on the embassy or consulate waiting another three months for you to get it.

That’s why, if you ask me for my personal recommendation, I’d say: If you’re unsure whether you need it, I’d rather apply for it in advance than take the risk.

🚨 Please note: This is just my personal opinion based on my experience and what I’ve heard from others. A Statement of Comparability isn’t always necessary, and Anabin evidence may be completely sufficient for your application. Ultimately, the decision is yours!

Tip 2: Don’t Expect Your Application to Be Finished Early

If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that March to August is usually the peak application season. So, if you apply outside this period, there’s a chance you might receive your Statement of Comparability a little faster.

However, this isn’t guaranteed! I haven’t been able to confirm this information officially, so I wouldn’t count on it when planning your application.

Case I saw online:

I remember reading about someone online who said they applied in January and received their certificate after only two weeks. Of course, that sounds amazing!

But everyone’s situation can be different, and online experiences don’t necessarily reflect the standard processing time.

My recommendation? Plan for the official processing time and treat an earlier result as a nice surprise! Don’t get your hopes too high 😂

Frequently Asked

Do I need a ZAB Statement of Comparability to work in Germany?

Not always! If you have a foreign university degree and want to work in a non-regulated profession, you may be able to apply for jobs without a Statement of Comparability.

However, some employers and visa applications require official proof that your degree is comparable to a German qualification.

Do I need a Statement of Comparability if my university is listed in Anabin?

Not necessarily. If your university and degree are appropriately listed in Anabin, the information may be sufficient for your visa application.

However, having an H+ university status alone doesn’t automatically mean your specific degree meets the requirements. Always check both the institution and qualification. For more information, please check my other post: How to check your degree on Anabin

How much does a ZAB Statement of Comparability cost?

As of October 2026, the regular application fee is €208.

You can pay by credit card, PayPal, or SEPA bank transfer. Processing starts only after ZAB receives the full payment and all required documents.

How long does ZAB take to process a Statement of Comparability?

The standard processing time is approximately 3 months after ZAB receives your complete documents and payment.

Certain eligible applications have shorter processing periods:

EU Blue Card: 2 weeks

Fast-Track Procedure for Skilled Workers: 2 months

These are official processing periods, not guaranteed completion dates.

How can I check my ZAB application status?

You can log into My Account on the official ZAB website and check the status under My Applications.

ZAB also uses the account to request additional documents and notify you when your statement is ready.

Can I speed up my ZAB application?

NO. ZAB doesn’t offer individual expedited processing upon request.

Shorter processing periods are available for certain eligible EU Blue Card and fast-track skilled worker applications, but simply having an upcoming visa appointment doesn’t guarantee faster processing.

Does a ZAB Statement of Comparability expire?

No. A Statement of Comparability does not expire and is valid throughout Germany.

Is a Statement of Comparability the same as professional recognition (Anerkennung)?

No. A Statement of Comparability evaluates your foreign university degree in relation to the German education system.

It doesn’t replace professional recognition for regulated professions such as medicine or nursing.

Final Thoughts

Applying for a ZAB Statement of Comparability might seem complicated at first, especially if you’re dealing with German bureaucracy for the first time.

But once you know what documents you need and how the process works, it’s actually quite manageable.

Here are the most important things I’d recommend remembering:

  1. Check Anabin first. You might not need a separate Statement of Comparability.
  2. Prepare all your documents in advance. Complete the ZAB Pre-Check before starting.
  3. Check your payment confirmation. Processing only starts once ZAB has your complete documents and payment.
  4. Plan enough time. The standard processing period is approximately three months.

Hopefully, sharing my experience will help you feel a little more prepared before starting your own application.

Good luck with your ZAB application! 🇩🇪
